What are Prácticas and Milongas?

Prácticas
In Tango, a práctica refers to a practice session where dancers come together to work on their dance skills in a less formal environment than a milonga (tango dance party). Unlike milongas, which are social events where the emphasis is on dancing and socializing, practicas are focused on learning and improvement. They provide a space for dancers to experiment with new steps, work on technique, and ask for feedback from more experienced dancers or instructors who might be present.

Milongas
In Tango, a milonga is also a social dance event or gathering dedicated to dancing tango, including its various forms such as traditional tango, milonga (the dance style matching the milonga music genre), and vals (waltz-style tango). These events are where dancers of all levels come together to enjoy tango music and dance in a social setting, often following specific cultural etiquettes and traditions such as the “cabeceo” for inviting partners to dance.
Milonga Etiquette:
- No teaching, no criticizing.
- No lifts.
- No unsafe figures.
- Leave the figures for shows at home
- No loud talking.
- No soliciting.
- Stay in your lane and move forward in Line of Dance.
- Move up and fill gap in front of you.
- Use Cabeceo and accept refusals.
- Keep eyes up to avoid collisions, both gents and ladies.
- Apologize regardless of who is at fault in case of collisions.
- Shower, brush teeth before milonga. Dry sweat between tandas.
- Ladies, feel free to ask men to dance with you in Calgary!
